Italian municipalities urge transition to Electronic Identity Cards

Municipalities in Italy are coordinating efforts to transition citizens from paper identity cards to the Electronic Identity Card (CIE).

The municipality of Fiumicino has announced extraordinary weekend openings at its registry offices to facilitate this transition for local residents. Scheduled sessions will take place on October 17 in Palidoro and on October 18 and October 24 in Fiumicino. Due to high demand, access is limited to 60 people per day on a first-come, first-served basis via a progressive numbering system at the office entrances.

In Orvieto, local demographic services are urging residents to book appointments early to avoid a rush near upcoming deadlines. While a government decree extended the use of paper documents, they will no longer be valid for international travel as of August 3, 2026, and the transitional period for use with public administrations is set to end on January 31, 2027. Officials noted a recent decrease in bookings and advise citizens, particularly those with already expired documents, to schedule their renewals through the municipal website to prevent service congestion.
