Italian Obstetrics Congress sparks debate over transgender maternity

The Italian Association of Obstetrics (Aio) is hosting a national congress in Riccione on October 3 and 4 to discuss clinical and social aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding within the transgender community. The program aims to address professional competencies, including managing stigma, discrimination, and barriers to healthcare access for transgender individuals.

The inclusion of these topics in the professional training program, which offers continuing education credits, has drawn criticism from the political group Futuro Nazionale. Critics argue that healthcare training should focus exclusively on traditional biological evidence rather than social interpretations of gender identity. The movement has called for a review of the criteria used for awarding professional credits and emphasized the importance of protecting the traditional family structure.
