Italian debate over transgender maternity training

The Italian Association of Obstetrics (Aio) has scheduled a national congress in Riccione for October 3 and 4 to address the clinical and social aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding within the transgender community. The program is designed to provide professional training on managing healthcare barriers, stigma, and discrimination, and is set to award 10.5 continuing medical education (ECM) credits recognized by the Ministry of Health.

The initiative has triggered a political dispute. The group Futuro Nazionale has announced plans for a parliamentary inquiry to Health Minister Schillaci, arguing that the training allows “gender ideology” to permeate the healthcare system and requesting a review of the criteria for awarding medical credits. Critics contend the curriculum contradicts traditional views of family and parenthood.

In response, Arcigay Rimini has defended the training, stating it is based on biological realities and that professionals must be equipped to ensure the safety of transgender patients and their fetuses. The association has accused political opponents of attempting to impose “ideological censorship” on scientific medical training.
