Italian olive farmers block road to protest price collapse
Approximately 300 olive farmers in Italy staged a protest on October 5, blocking the Bitonto-Palombaio exit of provincial road 231. Organized by the ‘Comitato Rivolta Olivicoltori’, the demonstration was held to protest the sharp decline in olive oil prices and the rising costs of agricultural production.
Protest organizers, including Marco Loconte, reported that the price of oil has plummeted from approximately 9 euros per kilo to 4 euros per kilo. This price drop, combined with increased expenses for diesel, fertilizer, and seeds, has left many farmers questioning whether harvesting the current crop is economically viable.
The committee is calling on the Italian government to officially recognize a crisis in the olive and olive oil sector. They are demanding an extraordinary national plan that includes a dedicated support fund to provide short-term relief and long-term stability for agricultural businesses.
