Italian olive oil sector confronts crisis with new partnership and nationwide rally
Federolio, the national federation for olive oil trade, and SEF Consulting have signed a partnership aimed at strengthening Italian olive‑oil businesses. The agreement, signed by Federolio president Tullio Forcella and SEF Consulting legal representative Errico Formicella, will provide companies with access to subsidised financing, managerial consulting, digital platforms, ESG guidance and information on EU, national and regional funding programmes.
At the same time, the sector is organising a large mobilisation in Bari on 19 June, bringing together producers, millers and industry groups from across Italy to demand government action against collapsing market prices, fraud and speculative practices. Organisers warn that extra‑virgin olive oil is being sold at less than €4‑7 per litre, far below production costs, and flag concerns about illegal deodorisation, counterfeit imports and inadequate traceability. The olive‑oil chain comprises more than 600,000 farms (over 800,000 including ancillary activities), about 4,500 active mills, a turnover of roughly €3.2 billion and annual production of 250‑360 kt, making it a vital part of Italy’s agricultural heritage and economy.
