Italian olive oil sector faces regional economic challenges and harvest optimism

The Italian olive oil sector is facing contrasting regional developments. In Sicily, the industry is struggling with economic instability due to unsold stocks. Approximately one-third of the previous year's production remains in storage silos, creating a risk of price devaluation. In response, the Christian Democracy parliamentary group has submitted an urgent inquiry to the Sicilian Regional Assembly, requesting extraordinary aid. Proposed measures include immediate economic incentives for marketing, increased anti-fraud controls to protect product integrity against unfair competition, and regional promotional campaigns.

In contrast, producers in the Rimini region are expressing optimism regarding the 2026 harvest. Following a difficult 2025 season, recent rainfall and the near absence of the olive fruit fly have improved fruit health. While production estimates remain cautious due to previous summer heat and drought, some operators, such as Silvano Pasquinoni of the Pasquinoni oil mill, are targeting significant yields, aiming for approximately 60 percent of the exceptional 2024 production levels.
