Francesco Boccia accuses Italian government of power‑consolidating 'forzature' over Rai and electoral law
Senator Francesco Boccia, the Democratic Party’s leader in the Senate, warned that the governing majority is imposing "forzature" to preserve its power. Speaking at the Pantelleria–Mediterraneo d'Autore conference, he said the coalition is forcing changes to the electoral law, overriding a Constitutional Court ruling on regional autonomy and pushing through a Covid‑related bicameral law, while neglecting wages, health care and other concerns of Italians.
Boccia called for the swift adoption of the Media Freedom Act, which would guarantee editorial independence of public broadcasters such as Rai and separate their fate from the government of the day. He accused Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of pretending not to understand the issue and said that if the opposition passes the act, Meloni will be the last premier to intervene in Rai's management.
The senator also placed the discussion in a broader geopolitical context, citing the need for Europe to look beyond the Mediterranean, engage with Africa, and reconsider the "old order" of nationalism.
