Italian Parliament prepares for busy September legislative session

The Italian Parliament is set to resume sessions on September 9 following the summer recess, facing a dense legislative agenda. A primary focus is the reform of the electoral law, with amendments due by September 1 and a Senate vote expected by September 15. The goal is to complete the third reading in the Chamber of Deputies by the end of the month. A critical point of contention within the governing majority remains the issue of candidate preferences, which requires a unified amendment from the center-right coalition.

To ensure the passage of the electoral reform, the government may resort to a vote of confidence in the Chamber. There is also the possibility of a secret ballot, which has previously caused tension within the majority.

Other significant dossiers scheduled for autumn include the reform of Rai governance to implement the Media Freedom Act, which could resolve leadership appointments for the broadcaster's supervisory commission. The presidency of Rai remains a point of debate, with Forza Italia supporting Simona Agnes despite opposition criticism. Additionally, the legislative calendar includes discussions on a new security decree, fuel regulations, migration, and the former Ilva steelworks.
