Italian Chamber denies access to Delmastro’s chat with Caroccia

On 5 August 2026 the Italian Chamber of Deputies voted by secret ballot, 206 yes to 133 no, to reject the Rome prosecutor’s request to obtain the private chat messages between deputy Andrea Delmastro (Fratelli d’Italia) and businessman Mauro Caroccia, alleged to be a front for the Senese mafia clan. The majority relator, Forza Italia MP Pietro Pittalis, argued that the denial respects constitutional guarantees and does not block the investigation.

Opposition parties reacted strongly. Members of the Five Star Movement raised their smartphones and shouted “Fuori le chat”, while deputies from the Alliance Verdi and Sinistra covered their eyes with blindfolds. The heated scene led to the suspension of the session. Opposition leaders accused the government of shielding “friends of the party”: Giuseppe Conte called the decision a “shield for party friends”, and Elly Schlein demanded that Paolo Borsellino no longer be invoked in the debate.
