Italian Parliament targeted in cyberattack affecting multiple officials

The Italian Chamber of Deputies has confirmed a cyberattack that compromised the email accounts of several members of parliament. Among those affected was the parliamentary email address of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. However, officials clarified that Meloni does not use this specific account for government communications; instead, she utilizes a separate, highly secure system at the Palazzo Chigi government headquarters.

In addition to Meloni’s parliamentary account, the email addresses of Andrea Delmastro of Fratelli d’Italia and Paolo Formentini of the Lega party were also compromised. While the Chamber’s press office stated the incident does not constitute an emergency, noting that such attacks occur daily, investigators are working to determine the full extent of the breach.

Members of the governing majority have expressed suspicion that the attack may be part of a broader campaign of hybrid warfare, following similar pressures on the information systems of other European and international institutions. The Italian Chamber is working in coordination with the National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN) to implement protective measures, which may include the temporary disabling of certain IT functions.
