Cyberattacks targeting Italian government institutions

Overview

In early October 2026, Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported a cyberattack on its official website. The ministry stated that protection systems successfully mitigated the attempt, preventing service disruptions. In response, Italy began collaborating with Romania and other EU member states to propose mechanisms for formally designating actors responsible for cyberattacks against European institutions.

Later in the month, the Italian Chamber of Deputies confirmed a separate cyberattack that compromised the email accounts of several members of parliament, including the parliamentary address of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. While officials noted that Meloni uses a separate, highly secure system for government communications, the breach also affected other officials such as Andrea Delmastro and Paolo Formentini.

Governing majority members expressed suspicion that these incidents may be part of a broader campaign of ‘hybrid warfare.’ The Italian Chamber is currently working with the National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN) to implement protective measures.
