Giuseppe Conte says programme first, primary schedule later for Italy's centre‑left
On 8 June 2026 in Genoa, Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement, told journalists that the centre‑left coalition will first focus on drafting a program for the 2027 political elections, with the decision on primary elections to be taken afterwards. He said, “The perimeter of the coalition will be the last thing we define… this is the time of the programme, I have said it many times.”
Conte made the remarks while visiting a kindergarten restored with PNRR funds and highlighted the “100 open spaces of democracy” that collected ideas from families and businesses, which will be used to shape the coalition’s proposals. He urged a “serious and progressive” project to differentiate the opposition from the current government.
The statements signal the centre‑left’s strategic focus on policy development ahead of the next national election cycle.
