Italian peace advocates promote nonviolence and legislative reform

In observance of the United Nations International Day of Peace, Italian peace advocates are promoting nonviolence through local engagement and legislative proposals. The Giro d’Italia per la Pace, an initiative by the Fondazione PerugiAssisi, has surpassed 100 local appointments across the country to foster a culture of peace. Francesco Vignarca, campaign coordinator for the Rete Italiana Pace e Disarmo, emphasized the importance of building bridges between local needs and global peace efforts.

Simultaneously, a popular legislative initiative has successfully collected over 50,000 signatures to request the establishment of a ‘Department for Unarmed and Nonviolent Civil Defense’ within the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. Promoted by the Rete Italiana Pace e Disarmo, the National Conference of Civil Service Entities, and Sbilanciamoci, the proposal rests on four pillars: strengthening civil service, establishing peace corps in crisis areas, reinforcing civil protection against environmental threats, and creating a research institute for peace and disarmament. The initiative seeks to shift from a war economy toward a peace economy through dedicated funding and citizen responsibility.
