Italian political leaders debate National Health Service crisis

Political leaders in Italy are intensifying criticism regarding the crisis facing the National Health Service (SSN). Grazio Trufolo, National Secretary of the Italian Liberal Party, has blamed previous center-left administrations for current medical shortages. He specifically cited the 1999 programming laws as a failure to predict future healthcare demands, resulting in reduced staff and long waiting lists.

Simultaneously, Beatrice Lorenzin of the Democratic Party has highlighted that approximately 5.8 million Italians forgo medical visits and exams annually due to the crisis. She has called for an additional 5 to 5.5 billion euros in the upcoming budget to address population aging, staff shortages, and inflation. Lorenzin also criticized the government's focus on differentiated autonomy, arguing it risks fragmenting the universal nature of the healthcare system and increasing regional inequalities.
