Italian prison initiatives expand library resources and community work programs

On 18 June 2026, the Lions Club Catania Nord and the Movimento Forense concluded the "Volontariato penitenziario" project at the Catania prison in Piazza Lanza, donating a large collection of books to strengthen the inmate library. Directorate head Nunziella Di Fazio and legal‑pedagogical officer Mirella Garro praised the effort as supporting the constitutional rehabilitative purpose of sentencing.

Separately, the municipality of Salerno and the Casa Circondariale signed a protocol allowing inmates to perform public‑utility tasks such as park maintenance and green‑space care. FENEAL UIL Salerno General Secretary Patrizia Spinelli highlighted the scheme as a means to foster personal responsibility, dignity and community reintegration, noting its benefits for both public spaces and inmate reskilling.

Both initiatives aim to enhance rehabilitation through education and productive work, reinforcing the role of prisons in social inclusion.
