Italian prison officers assaulted in separate violent incidents

Recent violent incidents in Italian prisons have resulted in injuries to correctional officers. In Turin, a prison officer was struck in the face after an inmate punched through an office door during a dispute regarding a telephone request. The confrontation occurred while the officer was explaining delays caused by a power outage and subsequent internet connectivity issues.

In a separate incident in Spoleto, four prison agents were injured during an altercation with a medium-security inmate. The inmate reportedly refused to return to his section after a medical visit, blocked transit areas, and attacked staff, even throwing a table at them. The officers required medical attention following the containment operations.

Donato Capece, general secretary of the Autonomous Prison Police Union, and Fabrizio Bonino of Sappe have condemned these events. They are calling for immediate interventions, including better screening of problematic inmates, increased staffing, updated operational protocols, and improved protective tools to ensure officer safety.
