Italian prison officials promote inmate reintegration and address overcrowding

In Palermo, officials organized a meeting called “Liberi di scegliere” at the Pagliarelli prison on 15 June. The event, backed by the regional Antimafia commission, featured president Antonello Cracolici and local representatives who stressed the need to give detainees the right to choose a different future, especially for mothers and minors from mafia‑linked backgrounds. Various judges, prosecutors and prison officials attended to discuss support programmes and symbolic gestures, such as a reading of “L’orazione per Falcone e Borsellino”.

In Salerno, prison director Carlo Brunetti addressed the Rotary Club, describing prisons as community resources rather than burdens. He highlighted the legal framework that obliges education, vocational training, work, religion, cultural and sport activities for inmate rehabilitation. Brunetti warned of severe overcrowding – the Antonio Caputo prison is designed for 370 inmates but holds more than 600 – and a staff shortage that hampers security. He outlined new projects, including ceramic, carpentry and bakery workshops, partnerships with local training institutes, and improvements to family‑visiting conditions, all aimed at better reintegration of detainees into society.
