Italian prisons see inmate overdose death and assault on staff

A 35‑year‑old inmate died of a suspected overdose at the Lecce prison, marking the third such death in recent months, according to the prison police union SPP. Union leader Aldo Di Giacomo warned that drug trafficking has become pervasive in Italian prisons, describing them as “the largest drug‑dealing squares in the country” and calling for an emergency plan that includes specialized medical staff.

In a separate incident at the Maiano prison in Spoleto, an inmate used a hidden razor blade to wound two penitentiary inspectors. Both officers required medical treatment and were expected to be out of duty for about 19 days. The prison police union Sappe condemned the attack, demanding urgent reforms to improve security measures and protect staff.

Both unions highlighted a broader pattern of violence and drug‑related problems within Italy’s penitentiary system and urged authorities to take immediate action.
