Italian Provinces call for direct elections and increased funding
During the national assembly of the Union of Italian Provinces (UPI) held in Imperia, provincial representatives emphasized the need to restore democratic legitimacy to provincial governments. A central demand is the return to the direct election of provincial presidents and provincial councils.
Arturo Scopino, Vice President of the Province of Chieti, noted that the discussions highlighted the ongoing uncertainty facing provinces following the Delrio reform. He cited a call from President Sergio Mattarella, who stated that the issue of democratic representation within provincial bodies can no longer be postponed.
Representatives argued that provinces are essential for territorial cohesion, coordinating municipalities, and managing vital services such as road maintenance, school safety, and local infrastructure. They called for a stable regulatory framework and adequate financial resources to match their responsibilities.
