Italy commemorates Italian Military Internees deported to Nazi camps
Across various Italian provinces, ceremonies are being held to commemorate the Italian Military Internees (IMI) who were deported to Nazi concentration camps following the armistice of September 8, 1943. These events follow Law No. 6 of January 13, 2025, which established a dedicated day of remembrance for those who refused to collaborate with Nazi-Fascist forces and instead faced forced labor and imprisonment.
In several locations, including Pisa, Teramo, Viterbo, Isernia, and Poggio Torriana, Medals of Honor are being posthumously awarded to the families of those interned. These recognitions honor the approximately 650,000 soldiers who chose what is described as ‘resistance without arms’ by maintaining their dignity and refusing to join the German-backed Italian Social Republic.
Commemorative activities also include historical lectures and research presentations, such as in Pieve del Grappa, aimed at preserving the individual stories of the victims. While many ceremonies have proceeded with local authorities and veterans' associations, some regions, such as Reggio Calabria, have faced criticism from associations for a perceived lack of institutional participation in the remembrance efforts.
