Italian Radiology and Oncology Societies Release Joint CT Imaging Guidelines

For the first time in Europe, the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) and the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) have published a joint set of recommendations for the use of computed tomography (CT) in oncology. The document, released through the National Guidelines System of the Italian National Health Institute, standardises how clinicians complete CT request forms and how radiologists report the examinations, aiming to improve communication between oncologists and radiologists, promote appropriate imaging use, and enhance the consistency and quality of cancer care.

Key statements include AIOM secretary Nicola Silvestris’ comment, “We want to improve clinical outcomes and the continuity of care for our patients,” and SIRM president Nicoletta Gandolfo noting, “We are increasingly called to give clear and satisfactory answers to medical oncologists.” The guidelines are intended for all clinicians and radiologists in Italy, especially those working outside specialised cancer centres, and support multidisciplinary, personalised treatment planning for a wide range of tumours such as breast, lung, colorectal and bladder cancer.
