Italian hospitals struggle with critical OSS and medical staff shortages

The Fials union warned that the Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and Milazzo hospitals will face a sharp drop in personnel after the internal‑medicine unit moves, leaving only three doctors (down from six) and eight nurses (down from sixteen) to staff the 16 beds.

In Sulmona’s urology department, the nursing union Nursind reported a total lack of Operatori Socio‑Sanitari (OSS). The absence endangers patients, forces nurses to take on hygiene and care duties, raises their workload and stress, and has been ignored despite multiple formal complaints.

At the San Pio hospital in Castellaneta, the emergency department operates with just four doctors and about twenty specialist support staff. Summer demand, amplified by the upcoming Mediterranean Games, is expected to push daily visits beyond 100, heightening the risk of a service collapse.

Separately, a social‑media analysis highlighted persistent denigration of OSS by colleagues and the public, describing a “crab mentality” and online disinhibition that compounds professional frustration.

All three regions stress the urgent need for recruitment and administrative action to prevent further deterioration of patient care.
