Italian regional immigration councils plan crackdown on labor exploitation and tendopoli camps

Prefect Clara Vaccaro chaired a Territorial Immigration Council meeting in Reggio Calabria, bringing together regional officials, mayors, trade‑union representatives and police to address seasonal caporalato, illegal labour and the exploitation of non‑EU workers linked to organised crime in the Gioia Tauro plain. The council outlined a three‑phase programme: demolishing the San Ferdinando “tendopoli” settlement, relocating eligible workers to housing in Rosarno and Taurianova, and creating a “Fattoria Solidale” ecovillage with 120‑200 beds that will operate as a social farm. Funding for these steps comes from the Caivano‑bis decree.

A similar council convened by the Prefecture of Trapani reviewed the territorial plan for migrant reception in the province, emphasizing coordinated action among state bodies, local authorities and third‑sector organisations. The meeting highlighted ongoing projects, including the FAMI “IN.TRA.” training programme aimed at strengthening operators’ skills in reception, health assistance and anti‑exploitation measures. Both meetings stress a collaborative governance model to improve housing, social services and legal protection for migrant workers.
