Italy 2024 LEA rankings: Veneto leads, south regions fall behind

The 2024 monitoring of the Livelli Essenziali di Assistenza (LEA) by the Ministry of Health shows a marked north‑south divide. Veneto tops the national score with 288 points (96 prevention, 95 district, 97 hospital), followed by Emilia‑Romagna (282) and Tuscany (280). Piemonte improves to fourth place with 272 points (95 prevention, 90 district, 87 hospital). The autonomous province of Trento records the highest prevention score in the country at 98 points.

In the south, Calabria ranks last with 189 points and is the only region that fails to meet the 60‑point threshold in district assistance (52 points). Sicily remains below the sufficiency level in prevention (49 points) and the autonomous province of Bolzano scores 59 points in prevention. Overall, the number of regions not reaching the minimum in any macro‑area fell from eight in 2023 to three in 2024.

Several regions meet all thresholds: Abruzzo (229 points, full compliance), Basilicata (70 prevention, 64 district, 71 hospital), and Lombardy (96 prevention, 89 district, 85 hospital). The data reflect continued investments in staffing, territorial care, and preventive programmes, while also highlighting persistent gaps that policymakers aim to address.
