Italian regions roll out new birth bonuses and study their effects

From 15 July 2026, mothers residing in the province of Trento can apply for a third‑child birth allowance. Eligible families may receive a fixed monthly amount of up to €400, with a possible total of €48,000, plus a premium of €200 per month for mothers who remain employed. Applications are submitted online using SPID or an electronic ID, and must be filed within 180 days of the birth or adoption.

A separate analysis of Sardinia’s baby‑bonus scheme, introduced in 2022, shows it raised the average monthly birth rate by about 0.3 children (roughly a 21 % increase) in municipalities with fewer than 3,000 residents. However, the policy coincided with an estimated 11‑percentage‑point drop in the probability that mothers with an additional child were employed, a relative decline of about 25 % compared with a control group.
