Italian road and infrastructure projects prolong summer traffic woes

Several Italian regions are extending construction projects into the summer, causing prolonged traffic disruptions and inconvenience for commuters and tourists.

In Civitanova the north‑side waterfront bike lane was partially reopened despite unfinished paving, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to use a temporary route. At the A7 Vignole Borbera interchange, funding for the planned upgrade remains uncertain, leaving the junction hazardous. The SS 36 Giussano‑Civate stretch will stay under work until the second half of 2027, prompting another summer of congestion. The Cittiglio Hospital temporarily moved its Emergency Department to the building’s first floor to permit ongoing upgrades.

Provincial roadworks continue on Viterbo’s SP 98 Valle del Marte and on Sardinia’s Viale Ciusa, where a new bus shelter has halved the carriageway, creating long queues. In Lucca, the city council approved a €250 k feasibility study to remove barriers and revamp Piazza Arrigoni. In Cilento, multiple roadworks on the Cilentana and Bussentina are causing delays, though the Soranna bridge is slated to reopen to two‑way traffic and the long‑awaited Pisciottana diversion is progressing. Meanwhile, the Emilia‑Romagna region and the national transport ministry are set to sign a protocol on the Bologna “Passante” project, aiming to eliminate A14 construction zones.

Separate from transport, the Bergamo province inaugurated two new nursery schools funded by the PNRR, expanding early‑childhood capacity.
