Italian tourism sector sees record hotel occupancy and rising travel trends in summer 2026

Italy’s hospitality market recorded strong growth in the second quarter of 2026, with average hotel room occupancy reaching 76.9% and the average daily rate (ADR) climbing to €172.38. The upscale segment (four‑star) led the market with 77.5% occupancy and an ADR of €176.05, while regional performance varied, the centre of the country posting the highest occupancy at 80.2%.

Mountain hotels are now treating the summer season as a core market rather than a secondary one, prompting operators to adopt dynamic pricing and distinct service models for the two seasons.

The “under‑tourism” trend attracted 21.3% of summer vacationers, channeling demand toward artisan workshops and rural sites and involving about 205,000 artisans across Italy.

Agritourism in Piedmont remained robust, with more than 1,450 authorized farms drawing visitors seeking authentic rural experiences and local food production.

Travel behaviour is also shifting toward car‑based itineraries; online searches for road trips rose roughly 20% in June‑July 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, reflecting a preference for flexible, multi‑stop trips.

Affordability remains a concern: Eurostat data show that 27.5% of Europeans cannot afford a one‑week holiday, and the figure is higher in Italy at 35.7%.

Tourism continues to be a major employer, with the sector now employing 3.2 million people – an increase of about 7% year‑on‑year and representing roughly 13% of total employment in Italy.
