Italy tourism 2026: high occupancy and industrial shift

Overview

Italy’s tourism sector continues its robust 2026 performance, with Minister of Tourism Gianmarco Mazzi describing it as a “strategic macro-industry” that accounts for 13% of national GDP, with potential to exceed 25% when including indirect economic impacts. August forecasts suggest up to 172 million visits, including 90 million international travelers.

Regional demand remains high. In Palermo, accommodation is approaching full capacity for the Ferragosto period, while Bologna reports hotel occupancy near 80%. The Marche region reports near sold-out status despite inflation and fuel costs. In Sicily’s Iblei region, international arrivals are surging, and Matera is seeing foreign visitors offset a slight decline in domestic tourism. Puglia continues its agritourism boom, and Abruzzo is experiencing growth exceeding national averages with a 7.2% increase in arrivals.

To sustain this growth, the Meloni government is transitioning tourism into a structured industrial sector. Tourism employment reached 3.2 million in 2025, an 18.5% increase since the current government took office. To address labor shortages, the government has implemented a 15% supplementary pay for night and holiday shifts, a 5% tax reduction on tips, and a 120 million euro investment to provide 60,000 subsidized housing beds for workers.

Despite these trends, local challenges persist. In Agrigento, Assoturismo President Vittorio Messina warned of a disappointing summer season, citing inadequate water services and waste management as critical issues undermining the city’s reputation.
