Italian Sollicciano Prison Partially Closed Over Unsanitary Conditions

A court in Italy ordered the partial shutdown of the Sollicciano prison near Florence because of severe hygiene failures. Inspectors reported rampant mice, rats, cockroaches, mold‑covered walls and other health hazards inside the cells.

The ruling follows the death of a 20‑year‑old Tunisian inmate, B. S., who hanged himself in July 2024 after repeatedly complaining about the conditions. The prison had previously ignored his grievances, even after he presented a captured rat as evidence. The partial closure is intended to address the most dangerous sections while broader reforms are considered.
