Italian steel and chemical plants face union protests and delayed talks

Italian union groups have intensified pressure on the future of two key industrial sites. In Piombino, workers at the historic steel plant have called for a meeting of the executive committee to discuss the appointment of an extraordinary commissioner and to keep attention on ongoing labor disputes, after recent resignations of senior managers and concerns over job security. A regional conference is scheduled for 24 June to press the national government for swift action.

In Terni, a summit involving the Moplefan company, local unions and regional authorities has been postponed to 18 June. The meeting aims to advance the recapitalisation of the chemical complex, with interest from a Polish investor, a financial partner and a petrochemical industrial group to revive production of polypropylene film. Both sites remain in limbo as negotiations with investors and the state continue.
