Italy's Tuscany industrial strike on July 9 draws nationwide labor actions

On Thursday 9 July, Italy’s main trade unions – CGIL, CISL and UIL – called a regional strike covering industrial, manufacturing, energy, water and waste‑management sectors. The strike was marked by a mass demonstration in Florence, where workers marched from Piazza Bambine e Bambini di Beslan to the Prefecture, and by coordinated stoppages in other parts of Tuscany, including Siena, where multiservice and collective‑catering staff joined the protest.

Parallel actions unfolded elsewhere in Italy. In Alghero (Sardinia), the Fiadel union accused local waste‑collection firms of a “night‑time blitz” that forced seasonal workers onto 12‑hour shifts to pre‑empt the strike. In Aosta, about 200 employees of Cogne Acciai Speciali held a sit‑in after the company unilaterally cancelled an integrative contract, warning that the industrial crisis could become a social one. In Pisa, pharmaceutical group Takeda suspended the planned dismissal of 67 temporary workers following union pressure, while in Porcia, metal‑workers’ representatives protested a restructuring plan that would cut hundreds of jobs at Electrolux. All actions underscore a wave of labour unrest across Italy’s industrial landscape, with unions demanding concrete industrial policies, protection of jobs and fair investment.
