Ex-Ilva: Federacciai evaluates proposal amid rising steel production
Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, has indicated that Federacciai is evaluating a proposal from national companies regarding the future of the ex-Ilva steel plant. The move comes as Italian steel production shows growth, increasing 3.7% in 2025 and 6.1% year-on-year in June.
Italian steel companies are currently leaders in European decarbonization, with 26 electric arc furnaces operating in the country. Nearly 90% of national steel production utilizes scrap-fed electric furnaces. Further capacity increases are planned through agreements with Arvedi in Terni and Metinvest and Danieli in Piombino.
Amidst the industrial crisis at ex-Ilva, political tensions are rising. A delegation from the Democratic Party (PD), led by Elly Schlein, met with trade unions to express alarm over the situation. The unions have demanded guarantees regarding environmental remediation, decarbonization, and job security, while criticizing the government's management of the crisis.
