Italian towns confront water safety crises: toxic algae and arsenic

In the Sicilian coastal towns of Aci Castello and Aci Trezza, health officials warned that toxic algae blooms, bacterial contamination and a stalled sewage collector could make swimming unsafe, with experts noting risks ranging from mild gastrointestinal issues to rare cases of fulminant hepatitis A.

In Castiglione in Teverina, central Italy, the local association A. Ba. Co. reported arsenic concentrations of 18 µg per litre in the public water supply—about twice the legal limit. The group demanded immediate signage at public fountains, refunds for water bills, economic support for affected businesses, and a formal notice to water provider Talete Spa, citing inadequate municipal response over the past two years.
