Italian water safety crises

Early on 2 August 2026, health officials highlighted localized water hazards in Italy. Simultaneously, in Castiglione in Teverina (central Italy), residents reported arsenic levels twice the legal limit in the public water supply, demanding signage, bill refunds and support from the water provider.

Later the same day, authorities reported that record heatwaves had triggered massive algal proliferations along Italy’s Mediterranean and Adriatic coasts. Toxic species such as *Ostreopsis ovata* and invasive algae were identified, prompting temporary swimming bans at numerous beaches from Apulia to Tuscany and large‑scale removal operations, including the extraction of over 1,000 tons of algae from Lake Iseo. The broader outbreak underscored a nationwide water‑quality emergency extending beyond the initial local incidents.
