Italian towns of Albenga and San Lorenzo Maggiore hold early July Marian festivals

In Albenga, the Diocese celebrated the feast of Madonna di Pontelungo on 2 July, recalling a 1637 legend in which a sudden light repelled Saracen pirates. The liturgy emphasized the biblical Magnificat and called the faithful to become bearers of spiritual light.

In the nearby town of San Lorenzo Maggiore, the annual celebration of Madonna della Strada began on 28 June and will culminate on 5 July. Thousands of pilgrims attend Masses, the blessing of grain‑laden carts, concerts by local groups, and a fireworks display. The event commemorates a medieval apparition and the discovery of an underground chapel with a Byzantine‑style icon of the Virgin and Child.

Both festivals blend religious rites with local cultural traditions, drawing large crowds and reinforcing community identity in the Ligurian and Campanian regions of Italy.
