Summer and Early Autumn Patronal Festivals Across Italy
Overview
The 2026 patronal calendar transitioned into September with continued religious and cultural observances across Italy. In Ognina, Catania, Father Angelo Mangano announced the program for the Madonna di Ognina celebrations, which will integrate religious devotion with activities such as a sailing event and a blood drive, drawing inspiration from Pope Leo XIV’s message regarding the care of creation and the encyclical ‘Magnifica Humanitas’.
In Molfetta, the Festa della Madonna dei Martiri reached its central day on September 8. The festivities featured musical performances by the Gran Complesso Bandistico ‘Santa Cecilia - Città di Molfetta’ and the Grande Orchestra di Fiati ‘Enrico Annoscia’. A key highlight was the ‘Sagra a Mare’, where the religious effigy was boarded onto fishing boats for a sea procession accompanied by decorated vessels. The day concluded with a pyrotechnic display and the landing of the simulacrum at the Seminario pier, where it was received by the Bishop, the Mayor, and civil and military authorities.
In Noto, the Ottava di San Corrado marked the final stage of summer festivities for the patron saint, featuring solemn Eucharistic celebrations and a major procession. Meanwhile, Reggio Emilia commenced the 47th edition of the Sagra della Ghiara, combining devotion to the Madonna della Ghiara with market exhibitions.
In Cerignola, the festivities for Maria SS. di Ripalta concluded following the historical reenactment of the icon's discovery. The event, which included a concert by Sal Da Vinci, saw high community participation and a positive economic impact on local businesses. Claudio Dilernia, city commissioner for Puglia Popolare, noted the success of the event, attributing the absence of significant microcrime to the coordinated efforts of various police forces, Civil Protection, and private security.
