European solidarity brigades arrive in Cuba for Fidel Castro centenary

International solidarity brigades and political delegations from Europe have arrived in Cuba to participate in commemorations marking the centennial of Fidel Castro's birth.

The European Solidarity Brigade José Martí, comprising approximately 112 members from 14 nations—including significant numbers from Greece and Spain—has traveled through provinces such as Havana, Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, and Holguín. Their agenda includes meetings with scientists regarding climate change adaptation, visits to software development companies, and participation in an international colloquium in Havana.

Additionally, delegations from Italy and Portugal, including members of the National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (Anaic) and various leftist political organizations such as Rete dei Comunisti and Potere al Popolo, are conducting activities in eastern provinces like Granma and Santiago de Cuba. These groups are delivering medical supplies and donations to health and educational institutions.

While these visitors participate in historical commemorations and community exchanges, the arrival coincides with a period of severe energy shortages in Cuba, with significant power deficits and system collapses reported in 2026.
