Italian universities open semester filter for Medicine and Dentistry

Italian universities have opened registrations for the newly introduced open‑semester pathway that leads to the single‑cycle degree programmes in Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry and Prosthodontics. Prospective students must submit an online application by 3 August and pay the required contribution by 6 August; teaching begins on 1 September with core subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics. Results from these exams will feed into a national ranking that determines admission to the second semester of the degree courses.

A draft law backed by deputy Gimmi Cangiano seeks to extend the same system to non‑state universities, potentially from the 2027‑28 academic year. Rector Enrico Gherlone of the Vita‑Salute San Raffaele University said the reform aims to harmonise access across public and private institutions and noted that nearly 65,000 candidates applied this year, underscoring the scale of the reform.
