Italian viticulture faces shifting harvest patterns in 2026

The 2026 grape harvest in Italy has been significantly impacted by rising temperatures and shifting seasonal patterns. In the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, the harvest period has expanded from a historical 30–35 days to between 50 and 55 days over the last forty years. This extension, driven by varying maturation speeds among grape varieties, has increased operational costs and complicated labor management for wineries.

In the Alto Monferrato region, the Brachetto d'Acqui harvest also saw an early start, beginning around August 10. While high temperatures accelerated the vegetative cycle, heavy rainfall in February and March helped maintain soil moisture, preventing widespread water stress. Despite the heat, producers reported healthy grapes with good acidity and structure, maintaining volumes consistent with recent yearly averages.
