Italian wine regions slash grape yields to curb excess stock
The Tuscany regional council approved a cut of about 20% in grape yields for the 2026 harvest of Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti and Chianti Classico. The measure follows a recommendation from the Italian Wine Union (UIV) to lower production in response to wine inventories that now equal roughly one and a half vintages, threatening prices and the income of small producers.
In the Marche region, the Institute of Marche Wine Protection (IMT) voted to reduce the maximum yield for the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC to 110 quintals per hectare, down from the 140 stipulated in the regulations. The IMT also set a temporary storage limit for excess grapes – up to 21 quintals per hectare until 30 June 2027 – to prevent further oversupply. Verdicchio production is about 90,000 hl per year, with 51% exported, mainly to European markets. Both regions aim to balance supply with demand, protect prices and sustain the wine sector’s profitability.
