Italian wine trends and aging studies highlight evolving consumer tastes

At the Gambero Rosso 40th anniversary celebration in Rome, industry leaders discussed the significant evolution of the wine market over the last four decades. Lorenzo Ruggeri, director of Gambero Rosso, noted that changes in climate, production methods, and consumption habits have shifted wine from a daily staple to a cultural experience and luxury object.

Modern consumer preferences have moved away from the intense, oak-heavy styles popular in the 1990s toward wines characterized by balance, elegance, and lightness. To maintain accessibility, the new Vini d’Italia 2027 guide highlights specific high-quality labels priced under 15 euros.

In a separate technical study in Piedmont, a comparative tasting of Ettore Germano 2016 Riesling examined the impact of different closures over nine years. The comparison between screwcap and cork closures revealed that while both maintained high quality, the screwcap version exhibited impressive freshness, whereas the cork-sealed bottle showed more evolved aromatic nuances. The study concluded that high-quality viticulture remains the primary factor in wine longevity, regardless of the closure used.
