Italy adopts SPID to address password security vulnerabilities

The limitations of traditional password-based security have led to the adoption of SPID in Italy. While users previously relied on simple character strings, these have become increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated cyberattacks.

Human cognitive limitations make it difficult to memorize complex, unique sequences, often leading to the reuse of weak passwords. This behavior is exploited by modern cybercriminals who use high-powered computing and artificial intelligence to test millions of combinations in seconds. According to guidelines from ENISA (the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity), weak or short passwords containing personal data are easily compromised, necessitating more robust digital identity solutions.
