Italy SPID digital identity implementation
Overview
Italy has implemented the Public Digital Identity System (SPID) to address security vulnerabilities and improve service efficiency. Initially, the adoption was driven by the need to move away from traditional password-based security, which ENISA guidelines suggest are increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks due to human cognitive limitations and the use of artificial intelligence by criminals.
Following this security focus, SPID has been integrated into the private sector to streamline identity verification. In the regulated online gaming industry, the system allows users to complete identity and age verification in minutes via direct data transfer. This replaces manual processes, such as document uploads, and helps licensed operators comply with regulations set by the Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM).
