Italy advances 5G hospital networks and regional health reforms

Italian hospitals are upgrading indoor connectivity, moving from legacy Wi‑Fi and DAS systems to 5G Standalone networks to support real‑time medical data, AI‑driven diagnostics and remote patient monitoring. The shift aims to eliminate coverage gaps that slow staff, increase IT complexity and hinder digital initiatives, with the Politecnico di Milano reporting that 71% of health providers now prioritize AI and 76% prioritize telemedicine.

In Lombardy, the regional health programme for 2026, presented by Welfare Assessor Guido Bertolaso, introduces new rules to cut waiting lists, self‑check‑in pathways, expanded telemedicine, stronger community health houses and specialised network upgrades. The plan also adds mental‑health, palliative‑care and preventive measures, alongside vaccination campaigns for seniors, children and newborns, and a veterinary‑expense reimbursement scheme for low‑income seniors.
