Italy advances leukemia treatment through immunotherapy and integrated care models
Recent developments in hematology are improving the management of acute leukemias in Italy. For acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the immunotherapy drug blinatumomab has reached a new milestone. After being initially used for relapsed or resistant cases, the Italian Medicines Agency has approved its reimbursement for use as a first-line treatment. This drug works by creating a direct link between T-lymphocytes and tumor cells to facilitate their destruction.
Regarding acute myeloid leukemia (AML), institutional discussions in Rome have focused on creating an integrated model for accessing innovative therapies. This model aims to address the complexities of the disease, particularly for forms involving the FLT3+ mutation. The goal is to strengthen the role of molecular diagnostics and ensure uniform access to new drugs and specialized care networks across the national territory.
