Italy advances major rail double‑track upgrades, Spoleto‑Campello set for 2027 completion

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the infrastructure arm of Ferrovie dello Stato, is investing €165 million to double‑track the 10‑km Spoleto‑Campello segment of the Orte‑Falconara line. The project, expected to finish in 2027, will add a new odd‑numbered track, upgrade signalling and power systems, and install a new computerised interlocking at Spoleto station. Once completed, travel times could be cut by up to 30 minutes on the Rome‑Ancona route and 15 minutes between Rome and Perugia, while station seismic upgrades and platform refurbishments will improve safety and intermodal access.

In the same period, the government confirmed that the Porrettana railway between Casalecchio and Sasso Marconi will also be doubled, but officials said the timetable and financing remain uncertain. Sub‑secretary Claudio Durigon announced that feasibility studies should be finalised within the year, while work on the associated road tunnel is slated to open to traffic next autumn. Regional leaders, including Deputy Marta Evangelisti and Mayor Matteo Ruggeri, emphasised the strategic importance of the project for local mobility, but highlighted that funding for the rail works has not yet been secured.
