Italian rail double-track upgrades

In late July 2026, Italy’s rail sector began coordinating two parallel tracks of development. A Europe‑wide safety initiative, CBRNe4rail, led by Italy’s ENEA, prepared training for station staff to handle chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive incidents, while the national railway federation FIDAPA pressed for a double‑track, electrified line on the Ionian route, citing rising tourist traffic and seeking PNRR funding.

A few days later, the state‑owned infrastructure operator RFI announced a concrete €165 million investment to double‑track a 10‑km stretch between Spoleto and Campello on the Orte‑Falconara line, with completion targeted for 2027. The project includes a new track, upgraded signalling, power systems and a modern interlocking, promising cuts of up to 30 minutes on Rome‑Ancona services. Simultaneously, the government confirmed plans to double the Porrettana railway, though financing and timing remain under study. These steps mark a shift from broader policy and advocacy to specific funding and construction commitments for Italy’s rail network.
