Italy advances port reform to boost maritime competitiveness
A legislative reform of the Italian port system is entering a decisive phase as the Chamber of Deputies' Transport Commission examines proposed amendments. A recent conference in Genoa, hosted by the Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority, focused on the future of national port governance and its role in the global market.
Matteo Paroli, president of the Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority, described the reform as ‘indispensable’ to modernize a system that has not seen major updates since 1994. He emphasized the need to enhance Italy's competitiveness in the Mediterranean and globally, particularly in light of geopolitical shifts that impact international logistics and supply chain security.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi highlighted the potential of the Blue Economy and the importance of leveraging Italy's maritime expertise. He noted that the country must transform its maritime tradition into industrial innovation and technical skills to remain a protagonist in the evolving international maritime landscape.
