Italy advances tourism through digital innovation and specialized journalism

In Italy, new initiatives are focusing on enhancing tourism through technology and specialized journalism. The Agenzia La Lucana of Matera has developed PIXTRU, an experiential tourism ecosystem designed to transform printed photographs into digital gateways. Presented at the ASA national conference in Teramo, the system uses smart kiosks to print photos from smartphones containing dynamic QR codes. These codes provide a ‘local pass’ with digital itineraries, multimedia content, and historical information, allowing visitors to connect physical memories with local culture and archaeological sites.

Simultaneously, the Italian Travel Press organized an event in Rome to discuss the evolving role of travel journalism. The initiative aimed to highlight lesser-known cultural sites to promote a more balanced distribution of tourist flows. Participants visited the Alberto Moravia Museum House to explore how storytelling can illuminate authentic local experiences and historical heritage beyond mainstream monuments.
