Italian tourism and regional innovation initiatives
Overview
Italy continues to advance its tourism and cultural heritage initiatives through digital innovation, regional management strategies, and sustainable mobility. The TTG Travel Experience remains a central Mediterranean hub. The 63rd edition of the event in Rimini, themed ‘Exist’, reported significant international growth, including an 11% increase in international exhibitors. The exhibition hosted 2,800 brands and facilitated over 15,000 business meetings involving more than 1,000 accredited buyers. Industry data from the TTG Monitor indicates a strong technological shift, with 46.6% of buyers planning to use Artificial Intelligence to personalize travel itineraries and 43.4% intending to use it for direct sales, though participants noted that human expertise remains vital for managing service disruptions. The next edition is scheduled for October 2027.
Sustainable mobility is also expanding through localized digital and physical infrastructure. In Terlizzi, a new bike station has been inaugurated as part of the ‘STEP – Puglia Imperiale Experience Pass’ bike-sharing service, connecting the municipality to a network of thirteen locations. Similarly, in Trieste, a joint campaign between Trieste Trasporti and Federalberghi Trieste has introduced a multilingual ‘Trieste Transport Guide’ via QR codes to improve public transport accessibility for tourists.
In the realm of economic development, the Lazio Region has implemented a significant venture capital strategy organized by Lazio Innova. Supported by approximately €140 million co-financed by the FESR Lazio 2021-2027 Regional Program, the initiative includes the INNOVA Venture 2 fund. The strategy utilizes tools such as TT Lazio for technology transfer and Venture Tech Lazio, which manages nine acceleration programs for pre-seed and seed stages, to bridge the gap between scientific research and market access.
